The Switch from Children’s Homes to Family-Based Alternative Care

When we think about children in crisis or those in need of immediate care and protection, the default setting that comes to mind is a children’s home. According to statistics from the National Council for Children’s Services, an estimated 45,000 children receive care in the over 845 privately run Charitable Children’s Institutions or children’s homes. While another 1,000 – 1,200 children are living in 28 government- run children’s institutions. However, the true scale of children living in homes is unknown. This is because comprehensive data on the number of children’s homes, especially unregistered homes, is unavailable.
